Training & Events

The Family Preservation Project rejects the idea that surveillance, punishment, and family separation keep people safe. We believe Disabled people have always cared for one another, given birth, raised families, and made meaning beyond medical and legal control. Our work is about reclaiming that knowledge— and protecting Disabled families from systems that were never built for our survival.

Accessibility and Focus

While these sessions are open to Disabled people across a range of experiences (including physical, sensory, psychiatric, and chronic health disabilities) they are especially relevant for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and those who support them. We will address how doula care can be adapted to meet diverse communication styles, cognitive access needs, decision-making supports, and autonomy frameworks, with attention to the unique forms of surveillance, ableism, and paternalism that often impact people with I/DD in perinatal systems.

About our offerings

For Doulas and Birthworkers

Join us for a virtual training centering Disability Justice–informed advocacy, consent-based support, and strategies for standing alongside Disabled people and families throughout their perinatal journey. Our goal is to equip doulas with tools to support Disabled parents and pregnant people within systems that often conflate care with control.

*Certificates will be provided to all doulas.

For Pregnant People &
Parents with Disabilities

Teach In & Doula 101: A welcoming space to learn about what doulas do, how birthworkers can offer support, and how doula care can be adapted to Disabled people’s needs and realities. * Stipends are available for attendees.

Listening Session & Processing Circle: A facilitated virtual space to share, witness, and process experiences of birth, medical harm, and perinatal care. Many Disabled parents carry stories of being dismissed, disbelieved, labeled, or surveilled. This session offers a structured, supportive environment to name what happened and what it meant in community.

For Healthcare Workers

Supports healthcare workers (including: physicians, nurses, midwives, and mental health workers) to recognize how medical systems function as entry points into family regulation, surveillance, and criminalization.
